Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra | Artist Spotlight

Dean Doyle’s musical career began in his early teens, singing and playing drums in an old-time family dance band in dance halls around Gympie.

In 1987 Dean was accepted as a trombone player (and later vocalist) in the Australian Army Band. Dean travelled to Gallipoli for the 75th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, played and sang at the Novia Scotia Tattoo in Canada, and visited Papua New Guinea twice, the first for the celebration of New Guinea’s independence and the second as part of the Australian contingent commemorating Victory in the Pacific (VP50).

In 1992, Dean was a finalist on Bert Newton’s talent show, New Faces. Past contestants include Olivia Newton-John, Daryl Somers, Paul Hogan, Keith Urban and Peter Andre.

Dean transferred to the RAAF Central Band Melbourne in 1996 as their fulltime male vocalist and trombonist, visiting South Korea and performing in the RAAF 75th Anniversary Concert in Melbourne.

In 2000, Dean began a five-year classical voice and teaching double degree at Melbourne University.

Before moving to the Sunshine Coast at the start of 2023, Dean worked as an enrolled nurse in aged care and as a music tutor in voice, trombone and trumpet at Xavier Catholic College in Ballina.

Dean’s main musical focus over the last 15 years has been performing with his trio, Dean Doyle with Sophistication, at clubs around Northern NSW. Dean continues to return to Ballina every two months for his regular Morning Melodies shows.

Since settling on the Sunshine Coast, Dean has been working with the SCREAM Jazz Orchestra as the band leader and vocalist, and singing and playing trombone for the Sunshine Coast Concert Band. Dean also teaches brass instruments at Pacific Lutheran College.

Dean will sing at A Night at The Proms on Saturday 8 Sept at The Events Centre Caloundra. Click here to buy tickets.
