Youth Workshop: Contemporary Physical Theatre & Dance
This isn’t just dance class. It’s a whole vibe shift.
Give your teen a day that’s part dance class, part theatre workshop, part main-character moment and a full stage that’s theirs.
This September school holidays, we’re throwing contemporary dance, physical theatre and musical theatre into one full-day masterclass that doesn’t really play by genre rules.
Across the day, participants will explore dance and physical theatre techniques, choreograph their own original movement piece from the ground up, then learn a brand-new musical theatre work created exclusively for this masterclass by up-and-coming choreographer and contemporary dance artist Jack Steele. The journey concludes with a special opportunity to showcase their work on The Events Centre’s Playhouse stage.
No dance background? No worries at all. This workshop is built for everyone – the ones who’ve trained for years, and the ones who’ve never taken a class but have always wanted to try. Facilitated by Ricki-lee Bernhardt-Turpin, this workshop suits ages 12-17, zero experience required, just curiosity and a willingness to move.
A full day to build confidence, make new friends and leave with something they actually made, and got to perform.
Program
Session 1 – Contemporary Physical Theatre
Start the day by moving, creating and connecting. After an energising warm-up, you’ll dive into contemporary dance and physical theatre, explore creative movement, and work with a partner to choreograph and perform an original chair duet. Finish with a relaxed studio sharing and celebrate everyone’s unique ideas.
Session 2 – Learn & Create
Step inside the creative process with choreographer Jack Steele as you learn an original musical theatre movement piece. Then it’s your turn to create, collaborating with others to choreograph the final section and make the work your own.
Session 3 – Take the Stage
Rehearse, refine and bring it all together before stepping onto the Playhouse Theatre stage. Perform your finished work in an informal showcase and experience the excitement of presenting your creativity in a professional theatre environment.
